Brief; Our client reviewed the pool and the large surrounding area of paving. The little-used pool had become costly to maintain and operate. The adjoining patio space was hot and windy. We were commissioned to design a greener, more comfortable space in place of the old pool area.
Scope; Demolish, Design, Build & Plant
We worked closely with our network of contractors to demolished the pool and install appropriate drainage. We returned the ground to the original level and finalised the design for the area. Predominantly shrub based planting was chosen to complement and flow on from the other areas in the garden. Lime trees were added to give shelter and winter interest from the house. We included sand piles for ground nesting bees, and started a low dead hedge for habitat. At the base of the steps, from the formal lawn, we installed a stone water feature to provide a new focal point.
To minimise carbon footprint, the vast majority of construction waste was reused on site – stone, concrete and sub base materials. Very little was disposed of.
Result; Within its first year, the clients were thrilled to have a softer, restful space to relax. They have found they use the space much more and enjoy seeing various wildlife also using the space.
